Past Experience

Demos is an accomplished C-level executive with extensive experience at Fortune 500 companies including Barnes & Noble, Staples, and Macy’s.

Barnes & Noble

In his most recent executive positions, Demos was Chief Operating Officer and then Chief Executive Officer at Barnes & Noble (2016-2018), where he developed a strategic turnaround plan to address declining sales, profits and market share at the Fortune 500 bookseller with more than 600 retail stores. Hired as COO to ease a transition at the company, Demos revamped the management team, adding 15 new executives to key open positions, and improved collaboration and cross-functional teamwork to support overall business simplification. He established a clear and achievable expense reduction plan, launched a thorough test-and-learn process to identify new product categories, and led a team that designed a smaller, more productive store prototype with state-of-the-art omni-channel features.

President, North American Stores & Online

Before joining Barnes & Noble, Demos was President, North American Stores & Online at Staples, the $21B office products retailer where he worked for 28 years. As leader of the $10B North American business (2012-2016), Demos led a retail/e-tail transformation plan that included developing flexible, higher-profit store formats, creating new services through internal innovation and acquisitions, launching new categories, and investing in marketing, merchandising and customer service programs. He was responsible for Operations, Merchandising, Marketing and Real Estate for multiple digital channels, more than 1,800 stores and 40,000 employees.

Group Manager

Demos started his career in the executive training program at Macy’s New York. He spent 4 years with the company, steadily getting promoted to positions from Sales Manager to Assistant Buyer to Group Manager, managing cross-functional 100-member group.
